Beachin'!!!

A few weeks back Kirk and I spent our Saturday at Huntington Beach watching Levi (one of the coolest kids on the planet) shred it up on some waves. Levi has Cystic Fibrosis and the salt water from the surfing is great for breaking up the gunk in his lungs. The Mauli Ola Foundation puts on these awesome surfing events for kids with CF and we were pumped that one was close to us down south so we could come watch him do his thing! Getting to spend the morning and afternoon at the beach with the Davenport Fam was super fun. Plus, Pye and Iz doin' also showed up for some fun. Looking to a summer filled with more days like this!

Book Review: Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight

I just finished reading Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight An African Childhood by Alexandra Fuller. It was par for the course with my usual interests when it comes to books:
 - True Story? Check!
 - Makes you laugh and CRY? Check!
 - Moments of "No way that happened"? Check!
 - Awesome cover art? Check!
Although there were some tough parts to get through in this book, I really liked it. Alexandra Fuller was born in England and then her family moved to Africa when she was 2. The book is her telling, in vivid detail at times, about growing up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe I believe) at the same time a long civil war was happening in neighboring Mozambique. It was so crazy to hear stories of her families survival and of a war torn nation from the eyes of a child. Her telling the stories of how 3 of her 4 siblings died...devastating. Which led to major depression and legit crazy-town for her mother. I would just sit reading trying to figure out why on earth her parents chose to leave England and STAY in Africa. She eventually meets her now husband in Africa and now lives with him (an American) in Wyoming with their 3 kids. Talk about stories to tell your kids about how you grew up. I would totally recommend this book. Very interesting commentary on a first-hand account of growing up in a different country in the midst of a war, dealing with racism (her parents, her neighbors and her own) and finish the book actually wondering how her family is even still alive.

Shots & Green Lanterns

This week I got to go to Karis' 2 month check up.
She was a rock star at the doctors.
Here's what went down.

She is 11 lbs 10 oz, her head is in the 80% for size...it's not quite an orange on a toothpick, but it's borderline.

We learned that shots are BAD!
And that the only good thing about them is that after you get...

...a sticker with Ryan Reynolds on it.
And he makes everything better.

Conversation with the Husbro

Julie: "When you lived in Germany did any of the guys sneak a peek of you in the shower after soccer practice since they are all uncircumsized?"

Kirk: "Not really, at least not in a creepy way."

Julie: "Did you ever sneak a peek at what an uncircumsized fella looks like."

Kirk: "Not necessary, in Jr. High our gym teacher would make all the guys shower after PE or he would deduct points from our grade, and not everyone in America is circumsized."

Julie: "Oh, did he force you to shower because of how smelly you guys all were after PE?"

Kirk: "No, because I'm pretty sure he was a pervert!"

I Wanna...

You know those ladies who you see walking about during the day time without a care in the world? The ones that are strolling casually through parking lots interrupting your goal of frantically finding a parking spot to get your butt into a restaurant or grocery store while on your lunch break? The ones that are browsing all the clothing racks and trying on shoes while you are quickly running into Macy's to pick up your favorite MAC eyeshadow that you have been out of for a month but have not had the time to stop by and get? The ones who are on their second glass of wine over lunch with their strollers right next to them because they have a enough time to sit and let the buzz wear off before getting their munchkins back into the car while you are glaring hairy eyeballs at your server because they are taking their sweet-butt time getting your check to you so you can make it back to the office in time for a meeting to listen to people who like the sound of their own voice more than anything else on the planet?

I wanna be that lady. I want to be a lady who lunches! Those ladies who drive me nuts...the ones that when I see them I mutter to whomever I am with or to myself "Don't these ladies work?!" "Who has all this time to just leisurely stroll about?!"

I wanna be that lady!

What can I say...it's been a rough week at work.
